The Basic Research & Literature Review Seminar for the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2024 was successfully held on March 16th at Hong Kong Design Institute and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee). The Sharing Session with Advisors was held on 19 Jan 2023 (Thur) in Hong Kong Science Museum. The Yuen Long Bypass Floodway Guided Eco-tour was successfully held on December 30 (Thursday) from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. A total of 15 students and 3 teachers joined the guided tour. Two guides from the Green Power led the participants to visit different sites and introduced DSD’s flood prevention works and the conservation of the river ecosystem, allowing them to gain a better understanding of the river ecology and biodiversity in Hong Kong.

The Design Thinking Workshop was held on 28 December (Tue) from 2:30 to 4:30 pm at Conference Hall 01 – 02, Phase I, Hong Kong Science Park. During the workshop, participants actively engaged in different sessions, including the group interaction, user experience, users interview for feedback, idea brainstorming, and put themselves into the set scenes, thought from the users’ actual needs, unleash their creativity to work out innovative solutions towards the problems. Two sessions of the Experimental Design Workshops were held on 18 December (Sat) and 28 December (Tue) from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm respectively at the Hong Kong Science Park. Participants learned the idea of experimental design from the workshop, they designed their own paper helicopters and conducted scientific experiments by changing different independent variables to find the answers. The Data Analysis Workshop was successfully held on 18 December (Sat) from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Hong Kong Science Park. The workshop introduced the basic knowledge, application and analysis skills of data to the participants. After the theoretical part, participants used Microsoft Excel to practice, analyze and integrate the data and present it in the form of graphs which will be useful in result presentation and explanation. The Presentation Skills Workshop was held on 10 April (Sat) from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Conference Hall 04 – 07, Phase 2, Hong Kong Science Park. We invited Mr. Calvin Lam to be the instructor, to introduce the keys of presentation and speaking skills. Participants actively interact with the instructor and follow the guidelines to practice different skills. It is believed that all participants have learnt a lot from the workshop, we hope that students could apply what they learnt not only to the competition, but also to the daily life.

The HKSSPC 2020 was successfully held online on 15 and 16 August 2020. We have received many outstanding science projects this year despite the pandemic. The presentation videos of all participating teams are uploaded and available for public viewing now. The Final Judging of the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2020 was successfully held online on 16 August (Sun), outstanding teams with their creative inventions and research results were awarded. This year we received over 200 teams of enrollment and 89 teams presented their projects in front of judges in the Initial Judging on 15 August (Sat), 21 outstanding teams were shortlisted to the Final Judging. The Initial Judging of HKSSPC 2020 will be held on 15 August (Sat) via online video conferencing platform, 20 finalists will be selected to attend the Final Judging on the next day to compete for the champion.  This year, the Final Judging and Award Presentation Ceremony will be held online on 16 August (Sun) and live-streamed to http://www.facebook.com/hkfygccst for public viewing and engagement in the Public Q&A session. The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2020 Sharing Session with Advisors has been successfully held in the Hong Kong Science Museum on 16th January. The event attracted 112 teachers and students from 27 local schools to participate. The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2020 Experimental Training Workshops were successfully held in the Centre for Creative Science and Technology in the Hong Kong Science Park on 21 December 2019 and 4 January 2020. Participants could learn more about experimental design and have fun with science. They had shown high engagement and worked as little scientists, in these experimental workshops. We hope the workshop could give participants a better idea of conducting experiments for a research topic or investigation. Students can also download the workshop PowerPoint for reference.

The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2020 Presentation Skills Workshop was successfully held in Hong Kong Science Park on 21 December 2019. The organizers invited Ms. Olivia Tsang from The Department of Communication Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University to be the Guest Speaker, to talk about presentation skills.  Participants learned different skills and applied in practice, showed enthusiasm and creativity. It is believed that all participants gained a lot from the workshop, we hope that students do not only apply the skills on competition, but also in daily life.  Students can also download the workshop powerpoint for reference.

From 5 to 9 August 2019, four winning teams, comprising 20 students and teachers, were sponsored to a Singapore exchange programme. They visited Nanyang Technological University, Hwa Chong Institution, ArtScience Museum, Singapore Science Museum and Canopy Walk etc. Students were also able to exchange ideas with local students in Hwa Chong. Through these exchanges, the students were able to broaden their global vision and understand the most updated scientific development in Singapore.
