HKSSPC 2019 Overseas Competition – GENIUS Olympiad 2019

2 winning teams from the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2019 are nominated to participate the GENIUS Olympiad in New York, United States, and competed with around 1400 participants from nearly 75 countries. The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2019, was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, and sponsored by the Innovation and Technology Commission as well as Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.

There are five categories in GENIUS Olympiad: Visual and Performing Arts, Business, Creative Writing, Robotics and Science. Each group has Top Grand Gold Award, Gold Medal, Silver Medal, Bronze Medal, Honorable Mention. Two Hong Kong teams won the “Energy, Engineering and Environment Award” in Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2019 represent Hong Kong to participate in this international competition.

The Hong Kong teams achieved great results for the first time they participated in the competition. St. Paul’s Convent School won the Gold Award in the science group with “SOSeliminator – Synthesis of Nanoselenium, Nanosulphur and Graphene Oxide for Dye Degradation and Hg2+ Removal”, and Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Yuen Long) won the Silver Award with “Smart & Safe Stroller”.  The outstanding results of Hong Kong teams greatly demonstrate the scientific research level of Hong Kong students and their connections to the world, as well as their inventions contribution to improve human’s life.

“Smart & Safe Stroller” is an improved design of the stroller, using different sensors and intelligent systems to protect the safety of the baby. “SOSeliminator – Synthesis of Nanoselenium, Nanosulphur and Graphene Oxide for Dye Degradation and Hg2+ Removal” is a study of nanoparticles of group six elements and graphene oxides to degrade harmful substances in dyes and block mercury ions, reducing damage to marine ecology caused by harmful dyes and heavy metals.

In addition to the work review, the competition also arranged rich and substantial activities for participants, providing a valuable learning experience in different aspects, including a visit to Niagara Falls and social networking for students.
