Jointly organized by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2017 sent 3 representative teams for I-SWEEEP 2017 to be held in Houston of the USA from 3 to 8 May. The teams competed the highest glory of the science fair with more than 400 projects from near 70 countries.
The results of the Hong Kong delegates were extraordinary and earned a triumph in the Award Ceremony. “Sign-translate Gloves” from Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School won the Bronze Award in the category “Engineering”. Hong Kong teams could be superior to other outstanding projects, implying that the research standard of Hong Kong students has reached the world-class level. Their projects can even improve the living environment of human being. “Sign-translate Gloves” can translate sign language to sound and text, and then import into a smartphone, in order to break the barrier between deaf-dumb people and the others.
The other representative teams, “Pico Rain Power” from Carmel Pak U Secondary School exploits rain as a power source, in order to better use the natural resources and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. “Investigating the Use of Photo-catalysts in the Production of Hydrogen from Photo-fermentation of Coal by Green Algae” from Carmel Pak U Secondary School investigates the use of green algae to transform coal into hydrogen gas, which is an environmental friendly fuel.
Apart from judging, the organizer arranged a great variety of fruitful activities for the participants, in order to provide them different kinds of learning chances, including visits to NASA and science museum, and a social event for exchange among students around the world.
Projects of I-SWEEEP 2017 can be divided into 4 main categories: Energy, Engineering, Environment – Management and Pollution, and Environment – Health and Disease Prevention. Grand Award, Gold Award, Silver Award, Bronze Award and Honourable Mention were presented in each category. Three representative teams for HKSSPC 2017 were selected in the Initial Judging cum Project Exhibition on 18 March.
