HKSSPC 2017 Initial Judging cum Project Exhibition

Co-organized by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Education Bureau and Hong Kong Science Museum, supported by the Innovation Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, the educational annual event Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2017 Initial Judging cum Exhibition was held in Hong Kong Science Park today (18th March 2017).

Over 900 students from 83 secondary schools enrollment application are received this year. Among them, 3 teams from Philippines come to Hong Kong to share science ideas with local students. The competition divides into Junior, Senior and Scientific Wallchart Divisions. Teams from Junior Division and Senior Division can choose a topic in the field of either “Biology and Chemistry” or “Physics and Engineering” and carry out their scientific research in the form of either invention or investigation. The research process emphasizes the key elements in STEM education: logical thinking skills and problem solving skills. Participants from the Scientific Wallchart Division have to produce posters through literature review, in order to illustrate science knowledge related to “Climate Change”.

After the professional judging process, 3 Hong Kong representative teams were selected from the Senior Division, including “Investigating the Use of Photo-catalysts in the Production of Hydrogen from Photo-fermentation of Coal by Green Algae” & “Pico Rain Power”  from Carmel Pak U Secondary School and “Sign-translate Gloves” from Christian & Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School, to participate in the I-SWEEEP 2017 to be held in the USA during early May. The teams will have high-level science competition with young scientists from approximately 70 countries around the world and have the opportunity to visit NASA. In addition, the Organizers announced the 20 finalists in Junior Division and Senior Division which enter the Final Judging, winning teams of Scientific Wallchart Division, and the newly added “Best New-comer Award” and “Best Potential Award”.

Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition fulfills the objective of developing youngsters’ science potential through better understanding and innovative application. Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition Final Judging will be held on April 14 at 9 a.m. in Hong Kong Science Park. Finalists of the Junior Division and Senior Division will compete for the Champion, 1st Runner-up and 2nd Runner-up.
